Philanthropist. A retired industrialist of the Johns-Manville Corporation, he helped arrange a $1 million gift for the University of Nevada School of Medicine through the Hiram Edward Manville Foundation. He served on the board of a number of organizations and was long active in local and national Boy Scouts of America. He himself attained the Eagle Scout and later was awarded the title Distinguished Eagle Scout of which there are less than 100. In 1981 he was cited with the Distinguished Scouter award, only one of two ever granted by the BSA Western Region. He also held the Silver Beaver award and the Silver Antelope. He served in the Army during World War II and was discharged as a Captain. He and his wife discovered Reno on a cross country trip and moved there in 1959.
