William “Billy” Harris, Jr., 91, of Stanaford, WV went on to his heavenly home on Friday, September 11, 2020. As a young man, Billy enlisted in the United States Air Force before being discharged just three short years later due to the death of his older brother, Ernest. Billy was very proud of his service to his country and wanted to serve so badly that he reenlisted five years later and served over four months before being discharged again after it was discovered the reason for his previous discharge. Billy was a long time member of Terry Independent Church and enjoyed attending until his failing health made it so he was not able to. He was also a 57 year member of The Beckley Masonic Lodge #95 A.F.& A.M.

Billy was a coal miner for many years before retiring. After retiring he enjoyed many hobbies. He was a sports fan who had a special love for the WV Mountaineers and the NY Yankees. He was an avid gardener who was most proud of growing tomatoes. He loved sharing his garden vegetables with fellow church members, family and the local community. He was also showcased in a newspaper article for his tomatoes. Billy had a special love for animals, especially dogs, and he truly loved his little Goldendoodle, “Sweetie Pie.” He loved birdwatching and was very knowledgeable in recognizing many species. Billy had a way of connecting with people with comedy and story telling and will be missed by all who knew him.

Billy was born June 10, 1929 in Concho, WV to the late William Verner Harris, Sr. (1892-1969) and Lena Cantley-Workman-Dillon-Biggs-Harris (1892-1940). In addition to his parents, he is also proceeded in death by his loving wife of 68 years, Lou Ann Harrah-Harris (1931-2019) whom he married on May 4, 1951 in Beckley, Raleigh County, WV (per WV Marriage License Register, Raleigh County, WV, 1951, Page 76, Line 8, Application Date: April 11, 1951); a beloved daughter, Debbie Jo Harris-Cox (1951-2019); a brother, Ernest W. Harris (1928-1949); and a stepbrother, James Biggs (Deceased).

Those left to cherish his memory are his aughter, Terry Ann Harris-Skeens & husband Greg Skeens; his son, Philip Michael Harris & wife Diana Harris; his grandchildren, Ashley Ann Reece & husband Rich Reece, Justin Todd Skeens & wife Rachel, Lindsey Paige Cox & husband Matt Cox, Jason Shane Fischer & Wife Karla Fischer, Jeremy Scott Fischer & wife Chanthy Fischer, Joshua Cody Cox & wife Brittany Cox, and Jennifer Christen Green & husband Rodney Green; twelve great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and friends; and two very special caretakers, Lisa Danley and Darlene O’Neal. Both have been constant companions to him since the passing of his wife and a blessing to the entire family during this time of need.
