Dr. C. F. Bell, father-in-law of John L. Lewis, international president of the United Mine Workers of America and head of the CIO, died yesterday at St. John's hospital. Death followed an illness of six months. He was 81 years old.
For the last five years Doctor Bell had resided with his daughter, Mrs. R. O. Miller. He had been in the hospital a week. Funeral services will be tomorrow at the Thomas C. Smith's Sons funeral chapel and burial will be in Oak Ridge cemetery.
For more than fifty years, Doctor Bell practiced medicine at Lucas, Ia. He was born Nov. 21, 1858 at Stafford, O. His wife, Mary Ada Eaton Bell died Jan. 11, 1932. He retired five years ago when he came to Springfield.
In addition to Mrs. Lewis and Mrs. Miller, Doctor Bell is survived by four other children, Mrs. Charles P. Charrier of Boise, Idaho; John R. Bell, Washington, D. C.; Floyd C. Bell, Indianapolis, Ind., and Herbert Bell of Springfield. He also leaves 12 grandchildren.
Mrs. Lewis arrived in Springfield yesterday. She said she did not know whether or not her husband would be able to come for the funeral tomorrow.
