The 1860 Federal Census, Nelson County, Kentucky, Dist. 2, points to Colmore as being Colmore Lovelace Barnes, the 11th child of Reason Barnes and Phoebe Dunn of Nelson County, Kentucky. Further, the obit of James W. Barnes of Cedar Creek, Nelson County, Kentucky lists Reason Barnes as his father, and C. L. Barnes of Elizabethtown among James' siblings.

Note that researchers find that Reason Barnes was a son of Samuel Barnes, born in Maryland, and Lydia Willcocks, daughter of William Willcocks.

Note that Colmore's first name (and middle name?) may have come from the Rev. Colmore Lovelace (1795-1864). Rev. Lovelace quickly became the most popular preacher in his Association and was the minister of as many as 15 churches during his 40 year career in which he baptized more than 1,200 people and married more than 575 couples. One of the churches in his charge was the First Cedar Creek Baptist Church, located just west of Bardstown, Nelson County, Kentucky from 1851-1855. (J. H. Spenser, History of Kentucky Baptists, Vols. 1 & 2.)
Reason and Phoebe Barnes, as well as many of their Barnes relatives, were members of the same First Cedar Creek Baptist Church, the 2nd oldest church in Kentucky and still in operation today (2012).
