Virginia Catherine Brandt, age 90, died at home May 4, 2013 in the Two Rivers Edgewood neighborhood with her devoted loving family at her side. Often called Ginny, she lived most of her life in Two Rivers. She was born on May 7, 1922 in Manitowoc, the daughter of Emma and Edward Carbon. Virginia was in the first class to enter Wilson Jr. High School and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1940. She worked briefly in the office at Mirro Aluminum Company and, later in life, provided childcare. In 1944, Virginia married John August Brandt, Sr. John subsequently served as a police officer and for 18 years police chief for the City of Two Rivers. Virginia was an active member of the Grace Congregational Church, singing in the choir, teaching Sunday school, participating in Evening Circle, and serving meals on wheels.

Her husband and one son, John (Jack) Brandt, Jr, predeceased her. A brother, Edward Carbon, also predeceased her, and a sister, Mary Lou Harty, lives in Mancos, CO. Surviving children are Jenene G Garey, Todd E Brandt, Elizabeth M Schiman, and Joey DA Brandt, with spouses Michael Garey, Jamie Brandt, Tom Schiman, and Lori (Schoss) Brandt, as well as Jack's wife Barbara (Bowser) Brandt. Her nine grandchildren are Noel and Paul Brandt, Anna Honzik, Luke and Jake Brandt, Tyler and Jenna Brandt, and Brandt and Edward Gilmer. Virginia has three great grandchildren; Noel and his wife Heather have two children, Inara and Joiya, and Tyler and his wife Kourtney have one, Audrey Jean, with Brody Gage expected in October. Virginia also has six step grandchildren Bobby, Kristine, and Kevin Schiman; Michael, Carly and Mia Huss, and one step great-grandchild - Cole Schiman. All these children and their children were the most important part of her life.

A memorial gathering is planned for friends and family at Jenene and Michael Gareys' home - 724 Zlatnik Dr. in Two Rivers on May 23, Thursday, from 4 pm to 7 pm. All are welcome. Her passions and never-ending interest in her later years were reading, gardening, listening to NPR, and bird watching. She never stopped learning and was well-traveled in her reading. We would be remiss without acknowledging Mocha, her attentive and fun-loving cat.

If you would like to contribute in her memory to any of the three local causes she favored, they are: Lester Public Library, 1001 Adams St., Two Rivers, WI 54241; Woodland Dunes Nature Center and Preserve, PO Box 486, Two Rivers, WI 54241; and YMCA, attn: Community Development, 205 Maritime Dr., Manitowoc, WI 54220. The Jens Family Funeral Home & Crematory, Manitowoc is assisting the family with funeral arrangements. Online condolences may be expressed at www.jensreinboldandpfeffer.com
