Maxine married George David Barrett on the day they graduated from Ark City High School on May 28, 1943. George joined the Army, serving in Europe in WWII. When he returned, they moved to Shawnee, where they raised their seven children. They were married 53 years until his death in 1996.
Maxine was a strong woman, a gifted mother, a loved grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, and truly a fun person to be around. She loved to fish, to win every game and to laugh. Her sense of humor and her ”Muttly” laugh were legendary in her family. She delighted in jumping out of a closet to scare unsuspecting kids and grandkids. At the same time, she was strong in her faith, enjoyed Christian music, and her children faithfully went with her and George to church. Her children and grandchildren cherished her wisdom.
Maxine loved her large family, both the family she grew up with in Ark City and her own family of seven children, and her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Everyone knew they were welcome in her home. Her sons-in-law and daughters-in law quickly learned they were loved as her own.
Maxine is survived by six children: Paula (Vernon) Smith, Susan Hunter, Jan (Dennis) Carter, Dan (Terri) Barrett, Stacey (Brett) Holscher, and Jon “Chris” Barrett (fiancé Velena); 22 grandchildren and 37 (at last count) great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law Kay Van Cleave and Donna Wise; sister Margaret Langor; brothers Vernon (Violet) Kimsey, Don Kimsey and Albert, Jr. (Connie) Kimsey.
She was predeceased by her parents; husband George; son David Barrett; sisters Betty Heimer, Jean Smaller, June Mavity and Sue Lindberg; granddaughter Lucretia Johnson; great granddaughter Storm Fessler; son-in-law Earnest Kent Hunter.
