Barb graduated from LDF High School (formerly Le Grand, Dunbar, Ferguson; now part of East Marshall School District), Le Grand, Iowa, in the class of 1965. She attended Faith Baptist Bible College and Nursing School. Barbara was a Registered Nurse with with a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, and spent her entire career as a home healthcare nurse in Iowa and Florida.
She was married to John Shackelford for 45 years and resided on the southeast Florida coast for 25 of those years. They moved to Tennessee in 2007 where she spent many years researching her Lawson-side genealogy. Eventually, she located her 5-great grandfather's gravesite. Surprisingly, the cemetery was less than 10 miles from Barb's residence. Barb was also an avid reader of books and loved to be around the calming effects of rivers, lakes, and oceans.
Barb was also the "girl who fell in the well" in 1958. While waiting with her siblings for the school bus one morning, one of her brothers saw the well cover collapse and alerted his mother, who immediately called the Le Grand Fire Department. The volunteer firemen had her out within 30 minutes, and Furman Parks was one of the men credited with saving her life. The story of her rescue made the front page of the Marshalltown Times-Republican, and was also a national and an international story at the time. We find it amazing that Barb still liked the water so much after such a terrorizing incident.
Barbara Joan Lawson Shackelford, 73, passed away on September 24, 2020, at the NHC (National HealthCare Corporation) Nursing Home in Cookeville, Tennessee, from complications of her year-long battle with pancreatic cancer.
Barbara is survived by her husband and all 6 of her siblings: Darrell Lawson, Curtis (Teresa) Lawson, Dwight Lawson, Rodney Lawson, David (Cheri) Lawson, and Brenda (Meghan) Lawson. She was preceded in death by her parents.
There was no public funeral service. Barbara's brother, Curtis, has her ashes in Tennessee. They will be interred at Rose Hill at a future date.
May she rest in peace.
