Vera Donnette Ottley Madsen
August 3, 1926 - September 10, 2020

Vera Donnette Ottley was born on August 3, 1926 in Gooding, ID, the first child of Stanley and Verna Ottley. She was raised with three brothers and one sister.

In 1928 the family moved to Magna, UT. She graduated from Cypress High School, then began working in Salt Lake City, UT as a receptionist and office clerk. She met Evan Madsen and on March 19, 1948, they were sealed together in the Salt Lake City Temple by then apostle Harold B. Lee. They had two sons born in Salt Lake City; Kent in 1949 and Randy in 1952. They moved to Arcadia, California, then to La Mesa which would be her home for the next 66 years. In 1957, Donnette and Evan welcomed their youngest son, Duane to the family.

Donnette supported her boys in their pursuits and served faithfully in church callings. As Compassionate Service Leader and Relief Society President, she sewed countless quilts, cooked untold quantities of meals, and coordinated the relief efforts for those in need in her ward. For many years, there was not a baby in the ward that did not receive a new handmade quilt when they were born.

As her boys married and had children of their own, she made quilts and blankets, sewed pajamas, shirts, and dresses, and made drawstring bags for storing treasures. She crocheted pot holders and blankets. She loved her grandchildren and made sure that they were kept warm with clothes and blankets handmade with love.
She was known for cooking spaghetti with homemade sauce, funeral potatoes, potato salad, Jell-O salads, pomegranate jelly, and suckers.

Donnette ended her earthly sojourn on September 10, 2020. She was able to spend her last days at home, surrounded by family and friends. She is survived by 2 sons, 14 grandchildren, and 34 great-grandchildren with 2 more on the way.

Graveside Services will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2020 at 10:00 AM at Greenwood Memorial Park, 4300 Imperial Avenue, San Diego, California 92113.
