2005 obituary. PORTLAND - Walter S. Ricker, 90, of Cumberland, died peacefully on Sunday, Sept. 18, 2005 at Maine Medical Center in Portland, following a brief illness. He was born in Falmouth on Nov. 8, 1914, the son of Ray and Harriet Ricker. He attended local Falmouth schools. Walter married Rita M. Hunt on July 31, 1940. Together they had three daughters and a son. Walter was predeceased by his wife Rita on April 6, 1974. Walter then married Ms. Doris Gillespie in 1977 and after 24 happy years of marriage, she died on May 25, 2001. Walter began working at the age of 8, delivering The Portland Press Herald to customers near his home on Underwood Road, Falmouth Foreside. He also became an assistant to his big brother Bill on his paper route. Walter worked on the paper route until his first marriage. He then worked at the Kittery Shipyard during the War and then to N.T. Fox Lumber Comp. His last employment was at S.D. Warren Comp. and after 24 years there, he retired in 1976, and for 29 years has been happily retired. In his younger years, Walter enjoyed hunting, fishing, and swimming at Town Landing Beach in Falmouth. His Greatest love was his family and he devoted most of all his time to them. In later years he came to know the Lord Jesus Christ and has attended church services at Royal Ridge Church of God where he was loved and cared for by many. Walter is survived by four children, three daughters, Claire Ricker of Saco, Sally Timmons and her husband Michael of Cumberland, and Nancy Kelley of Portland; a son, Ronald Ricker and his wife Teresa of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; two step-children, John Ricker and Suzanne Dworak; beloved sister, Muriel Wood and her husband Arnold of Saco, eight grandchildren, Joyce Conant of Baltimore, Md., Charlene Gratton of Lebanon, Michelle Topham of Gray, Carrie Fellows of New Gloucester, Julie Profenno of Westbrook, Sean and Steven and Shannon Ricker of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; nine great-grandchildren, Jason Peppin, Jennifer Tufts, Nick Gratton, Andrew Topham, Justin Fellows Ricky Profenno, Melissa Green, Kyle Campbelle, and Bethany Kelly; and many nieces and nephews. Walter was predeceased by his two wives; and two brothers, Wilbur Ricker and Clifford Ricker. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, Sept. 22, at 10-11 a.m. at Jones Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland. Memorial service will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. Brian Wade will officiate. Interment will be at Brooklawn Memorial Park at a later date.
