SORGE, WALTER C
SGT US ARMY
WORLD WAR II

Walter Christ Sorge, 81, Isabel, S.D., died Nov. 30, 2004, at a Sturgis, S.D., medical center.

Following his wishes, his body was cremated. Inurnment will be at North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan. Arrangements are with Kinkade Funeral Chapel.

Walter Sorge, son of Alex and Lena (Skubinna) Sorge, was born May 12, 1923, near Center. Growing up on the family farm, he continued to work the farm along with his brother, Ed, after their father died.

In 1941, Walter married Marie Wenger of Hazen.

With the onset of World War II, he answered the call of his country to military duty. Volunteering for the newly formed Army Paratroopers, he saw extensive combat duty in the Pacific and Corrigedor and other on the Phillippine Islands reaching the rank of Sergeant.

After the war, the family farm was sold and Walter moved his young family to Washington state, where he worked in the shipyards, as well as owning his own garage business until 1951, when the family returned to North Dakota. Here he became involved in sales work, which he continued for the rest of his career. His work took him throughout the Dakotas, where he became acquainted with many people who became life long friends. Moving to Isabel in 1969, he and Marie along with long time friends, the John Boehlers, started Hel-Mar industries, a candle manufacturing company that continues today.

Walt spent his final years at the Manor in Isabel, telling his stories and experiences, and was often encouraged to write a book recounting his experiences.

Walt is survived by his wife, Marie, Everett, Wash.; two sons, Donald, Tacoma, Wash., and Ronald (Sandra), Everett; one daughter, Rayetta (Jerry) Perrett, Pt. Townsend, Wash.; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one brother, Edward (Irma), Bismarck; and one sister, Emma Schwalbe, Center.

Walt was a true survivor, surviving intense military combat, near fatal car accidents, three strokes and a heart attack, always recovering with determination until finally succumbing to a final heart attack after surgery at Ft. Meade Veterans hospital in Sturgis, S.D.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Ruben; and a sister, Ida Henke.

He will be missed.
