Justus W. "Dan", Danehower, LCDR USN (Ret.)

Dan was born in Miami, Florida on January 26, 1926. He was the third son of six children. His family moved to Alabama where he graduated from Glencoe High School. During World War II he attended Howard College in Birmingham as part of the V12 Program and played on their football team.
At the end of the war, he went on to the University of Alabama where he met and married Corene. They both graduated in February 1951. Following graduation he was recalled to active duty in the Navy. He continued his career in the Navy throughout the Korean War. He went on to OCS in Newport, Rhode Island where he received his commission as a Naval Officer.
Throughout his military career he was stationed at the Naval Shipyards in Portsmouth, Virginia and later in Jacksonville, Florida. From there he went back to Norfolk to become the engineering officer on the USS Everglades. In 1957, he left active duty, remaining in the reserves until retiring from the Navy.

In February 1857, the family (which now included a daughter, Debbie) moved to Springfield, VA where Dan was employed as a civilian for the Navy Department. In 1960, a son named Tim was born.
Shortly after moving to Springfield, they joined St. Johns United Methodist Church. While a member at St. John's Dan became very active serving in many leadership roles: Chairman of the first building committee, Lay Leader, Trustee, Usher, and various church committees.

Dan had many other interests as well which included taking exciting vacation trips with friends and family, attending Redskin Football Games and entertaining his 8 grandchildren: Jonathan, Michael, Christopher and Katie Vorhis, Joshua, Joseph, Joseph, James and Jesse Danehower, later including a granddaughter-in-law Jennifer Probst.

Dan is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Corene Peacock Danehower.
