Joseph ‘Joe’ Wayne Brinkman, age 71, of Barry, IL passed away Saturday, October 3, 2020 at Barry Community Care Center. He was born December 12, 1948 to Melvin D. Brinkman and Roberta J. Pulliam Brinkman in Quincy, IL. He married Gloria Heavner on May 2, 1981 in Barry, IL and she survives.
Joe graduated from Barry High School in 1967 and then went to work for the Norfolk Railroad as a foreman for 15 years. He then worked for Ameren/CIPS as a fuel handling operator until his retirement. He was a member of the Barry United Methodist Church, the Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union #148, the Jaycees, was named a Friend of the Community at the Barry Apple Festival in 2012, and worked many hours at the Barry Food Pantry. He helped Gloria deliver Meals-On-Wheels, deliver papers, and helped her in all her volunteering. Joe was always ready to serve and helped anyone who needed it.
He loved to garden, making sure that the area widows were supplied with vegetables for canning. There were very few other people in town who did not benefit from his garden, he was known as ‘Cucumber Joe’ at the library. He also loved quail hunting, going to the gambling boat, and sending his mother-in-law a ‘dirty’ birthday cards (which she enjoyed reciprocating!). When he was younger, Joe enjoyed the days of playing softball on the league team, and he bowled for many years on the Niebur Funeral Home team and on a couple’s league with Gloria. Joe’s greatest love was his wife and family and he will be dearly missed by all.
He is survived by his wife, Gloria Brinkman of Barry, IL; his sons, Brent (Susan) Brinkman of St. Charles, MO and Jeffery Brinkman of Barry, IL; grandchildren, Dakota Salmon, Braeden Brinkman, Breanna Brinkman, Katrina Brinkman, and honorary grandchildren, Bub, Ethan, Evan and Liam; brothers, Bradley (Jane) Brinkman of Macon, MO, Brice Brinkman of Springfield, IL, Kirk Brinkman of Springfield, IL and sister, Janet Chesney of Stockton, KS; numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Melvin D. Brinkman and brother, Michael Brinkman.
Visitation will be Thursday, October 8, 2020 from 9:00 AM – 10:30 AM at Niebur Funeral Chapel in Barry, IL. Graveside service and interment will follow Thursday, October 8, 2020 at Kinderhook Cemetery in Kinderhook, IL at 11:00 AM. Due to COVID 19, please wear masks and maintain social distancing.
