Bauer, George 4/1/1925 - 5/8/2018 - Ann Arbor

George C. Bauer, lifelong resident of Washtenaw County, passed away Tuesday, May 8, 2018 with his children at his side. He was 93 years old.

He was born on April 1, 1925 to Fred and Venetta (Morgan) Bauer. Being born on April Fool's Day turned out to be extremely fitting, he had a great sense of humor. He never missed an opportunity to make others laugh.

On his 18th birthday he received a special present in the mail from Uncle Sam, he was just happy to choose his branch of service and was inducted in to the US Navy in 1943. He served aboard the USS Pennsylvania, nicknamed the Pennsy, which was the flagship of the 7th Fleet under Admiral Halsey, where they saw action in numerous invasions, during the time he served on the ship another sailor on board was Johnny Carson.

When George returned home he had his mustering out pay, and his father gave him some good advice, which he followed and purchased a piece of land with a hole for a basement, and after getting married in 1948 he built a home on that basement to raise his family in. The home started out as a two bedroom and as more kids arrived it became a three bedroom, then a family room addition and then a garage. All of which saw participation of his brothers & friends.

Some more good advice from his father, which George took, was to become a plumber. George worked for Hutzel Plumbing Company for 35 years, which took good care of him and his family. In retirement George and Loris moved to Dexter on the river across from the Cider Mill. Which they enjoyed immensely for over 25 years.

At the end of George's life he filled it with family and friends, playing cards with his group, you may have seen them at Wendy's or McDonalds livening up the establishments. During the summer months he could also be seen in Monument Park across from the Dairy Queen in Dexter meeting lots of friends and making new ones. He also brought a lot of joy to others with his dune buggy and his four legged friends.

George is survived by three children; son, David Bauer ; two daughters Bonnie Heald and her husband Tom and Sherri Bauer; one grandson Brandon Bauer; three great grandchildren Justine, Kayla and Noah; one brother Fred Bauer Jr. and many nieces, nephews and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Loris Bauer in 2009 and one son Dennis Bauer; his brother Arthur Bauer and his very loving sister Katherine Keeton. Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 14, at 2:00 pm at the Nie Family Funeral Home, Liberty Road Chapel, 3767 W. Liberty Road, Ann Arbor. Interment will follow at Bethlehem Cemetery.
