A private service for Piorino F. "Frank" Brown, Jr., was held October 3, 2020 at St. Joseph Cemetery in Ashtabula. Mr. Brown died June 12, 2020 at Saybrook Landing of Covid-19 pneumonia and complications of Alzheimer's. His wife, daughter, and son-in-law were at his bedside.
Born July 24, 1940, he was the oldest son of Piorino F. and Joanna (Massi) Brown, Sr. Known as Francis by his family he grew up in Ashtabula's "Forty Acres" Italian neighborhood. He graduated from St. John High School in 1959. He joined the Navy, serving from 1960-1964 as a commissary man. He achieved the rank of chief petty officer. His duties included maintaining supplies for all meals onboard, menu planning, and cooking. He served aboard the U.S.S. Rockbridge, a troop transport holding, 2600 Marines and Navy personnel. He received letters of commendation for his duties from ship senior officers. He sailed out of Norfolk, Virginia. The ship did two Mediterranean tours and participated in the blockade of Cuba during the missile crisis of 1962. He was able to visit Italy, Spain, France, Greece, Turkey, Malta, and the Caribbean. He told many colorful stories of his experiences.
He returned to civilian life in 1964. He worked at the Ashtabula Bow Socket until it closed. He finished out his working years at Ashtabula Giant Eagle. He was a proud union member of the steelworkers and the UFCW.
Frank loved people and loved to cook. Both families thoroughly enjoyed his kitchen creations. His method of preparing the holiday turkey is now used by many.
He had been a member of the Lion's Club and the Ashtabula Rod and Gun Club. Although he had stopped attending larger, more crowded events, he was a member of Our Lady of Peace Parish.
Frank is survived by his wife of almost 45 years, the former Charlotte Harris. They married at St. Joseph Calasanctius Church in Jefferson on August 16, 1975. They had one daughter, Elizabeth Ann Onzima and husband Pius, of Dublin, Ohio. Also surviving are brother, Joseph of Mentor and sister, Tina (Russell) Stainfield of Valencia, Pennsylvania, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; aunt, Filomena Brown who lived with the family and youngest brother, Mark in childhood. He also counted his wife's family as his. He knew them before he met Charlotte. His in-laws, Eugene and Carolyn Harris and sister-in-law, Dian Harris also preceded him.
Frank's family was acutely aware of his age and health problems. He was almost 80, was diagnosed with dementia in 2017 and had probably begun struggling with is several years prior. He was diabetic and also suffered a broken hip in 2019. We knew that every day with him was a blessing. He tested positive for coronavirus April 21 and passed on June 12, 2020. Hospice services from Bella Care Provided for pain relief in his final 3 days.
He knew family and some old friends. He still enjoyed his visits, a good meal, and funny stories. He was also aware, despite his dementia, of our nation's political climate. It is our family's firm belief that had appropriate action been initiated in February when the chief executive knew how the virus was spread and how deadly it is, Frank might still be with us. He was still urging people to vote. Please, do so.
We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all the staff at Saybrook Landing. His care was professional, personal, loving, and clinically exemplary. They took excellent care of us as well. They gave us loving care and wept with us at his passing. The Bella Care hospice was immediately involved and quickly got Frank's terrible pain relieved. For that we are eternally grateful.
If you are so inclined to remember Frank with a donation, the family suggests honoring his love of cooking and feeding others. Donations can be made to, Our Lady of Peace, soup kitchen and food pantry, 3312 Lake Ave., Ashtabula, Ohio 44004 or D.O. Ministries, 3703 Station Ave., Ashtabula, Ohio 44004.There is great need in his hometown.
