Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. Served in the Civil War as Sergeant Major of the 5th United States Colored Infantry. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery at the Battle of Chapins Farm, Virginia on September 29, 1864. His citation reads "Took command of Company C, after all the officers had been killed or wounded, and gallantly led it". His Medal was issued on April 6, 1865. Sergeant Major Holland was one of 22 African-Americans to receive the Medal of Honor during the Civil War. Despite his bravery, and despite his acting as a officer in combat, he never received a officer's commission.
