Samuel was a Boston merchant. With his older two brothers, James and Thomas Handasyd, he was involved with trade to and from Santa Domingo, now Haiti. He was there when the great slave revolt took place, and he wrote a remembrance of the events many years later for the Mass. Historical Society. He retired to Brookline where his house still stands on Cottage Street, and busied himself with horticulture, especially the growing of pears. He grew 27 varieties and even after becoming blind could identify each by taste, smell, and feel. He was an early member of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society.
