Benson immigrated to the U.S. in 1874. He was a successful farmer, able businessman and a prominent man in the official life of Montcalm County, Michigan. He had a 160 acre farm called "The Maples" near Howard City, in Winfield Twp. He received his education in Canada, and in Michigan he worked on the home farm until he was 25. He took charge of the home farm in 1880 and lived there as a general farmer until 1899, when he went to Stanton and became treasurer of Montcalm County for six years. He was re-elected to that office on two occasions. He was also a supervisor of Winfield Twp. As a businessman, he was a member of the firm of Stebbins and Gaffield, of Stanton, furniture and hardward dealers, for about one year. He then was the director and vice president of the Stanton Bank and a stockholder of the Union Telephone Company.

He married Alice Sage June 12, 1879 in Coral, Montcolm Co., Michigan and they had two sons: George Emery (1885-1905) and George Benson Gaffield (1895-1978).
