Caroline Matilda Shaw was a daughter of Tilman and Susanna Shaw. She married Hudson J Nance on March 27, 1853 in Randolph County, North Carolina. In 1859 they left North Carolina in an ox drawn wagon and arrived in Lamar County, Texas that same year. Together they raised nine boys to manhood, three born in North Carolina and six born in Lamar County, Texas. Hudson died near Blossom, Texas in 1882. At Caroline's death there were 6 surviving sons; Millard Filmore, Noah Nixon, Robert Henry, Lum A.,James B. and Charles L Nance. Hudson was a lay Methodist preacher and Caroline was a member of that faith for 50 years. A noble and good woman has gone to her reward.
