Sam was born June 19, 1930 in Yadkin County, NC, son of the late Stancile Kimbrough Sain and Cora Lea Brewbaker Sain.
He graduated from Courtney High School and received a B.S. degree in Animal Science from N.C. State University. He married the love of his life, Margaret Hudspeth, on June 5, 1954.
After serving in the U.S. Army, Sam began his career as a Union County extension agent in 1956. He then joined American Bank & Trust Company in 1960 as head of Farm Relations. This began his 32 years in the banking industry, where he was Executive Vice President and on the Board of United Carolina Bank of Monroe. He served on the North Carolina Bankers Association in the 1970s. He retired from United Carolina Bank (now BB&T/Truist) in 1992. Viewing education as the door to opportunity, he instructed banking courses at CPCC American Institute of Banking. He was a strong supporter of Wingate University, and was an advisor to Meredith College’s School of Business. Sam maintained an active civic life and was an integral player in the blending of rural Union County with the rapid growth of businesses. He served on the Union County Chamber of Commerce and as Chairman of the Monroe Redevelopment Commission, he was instrumental in the revitalization of the new courthouse area downtown. He held many leadership positions with United Way and the Monroe Lions Club. Sam was Monroe Jaycees’ Outstanding Young Man of the Year in 1960. He enjoyed delivering Meals on Wheels and visiting with each person to which he delivered. As a true Wolfpack fan, he served as Chairman of Union County’s NC State Alumni Association and the Wolfpack Club.
Being raised by a dairy farmer and a carpenter, he kept his love for the soil and agriculture. He helped the 4-H program grow and started the Youth Steer Show and Sale. He was an avid gardener, and all who knew him enjoyed the fruits of his labor. He designed and partnered to build homes across Union County and enjoyed woodworking in his shop.
Sam loved the Lord and his church. He was an active member of First Baptist Church of Monroe since 1956, where he served as Treasurer, Deacon, Trustee, Sunday School Superintendent, and cherished his Then and Now Sunday School Class. Sam valued family and loved them well. He was so grateful to get sons-in-law to share in sports, golf and woodworking. He was very proud of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and had a unique relationship with each one of them.
In the 1960s, he started the tradition of annual family beach trips to Ocean Isle Beach which continue today.
Sam was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret, and sister, Polly Manning.
He is survived by his daughters, Deborah Elliott (Randy), Sandra Byrd (Steve), Vicky Scott (Jamie) and Martha McClellan (Doug); 12 grandchildren: Michael Elliott (Katherine), Kimberly Allen (Travis), Charlotte Deitz (John) and Daniel Elliott; Rachel, Davis and Kelly Byrd; Mark Scott (Tierney), Kevin Scott (Sarah) and Amy Scott; Hannah Possee (Brian) and Nathan McClellan; 12 great-grandchildren: Ian, Avery, Kendall, Ayden and McKenzie Elliott; William and Tyler Allen; Finleigh, Graelyn and Westyn Scott; Piper and Harrison Scott; two sisters, Kate McBride and Barbara Mabe, and many nieces and nephews.
