On June 23, 1817, a marriage bond was signed. "The condition of the above obligation is such that whereas there is a marriage to be had and solemnized between the above bound John Howerton and Barberry Jones - of this county."
On June 26, 1817, a marriage was recorded: "John Howerton and Barberry Jones was married by me. - Daniel Williams"
In the 1850 US Federal Census, her name is enumerated as "Barbary" and her age is 48 (suggesting a birth year of about 1802). She was born in Kentucky.
In the 1860 US Federal Census, her name is enumerated as "Barbara A." and her age is 64 (suggesting a birth year of about 1796). She was born in Kentucky. This is the only record, created during her lifetime, that gives her names as Barbara instead of Barberry. Of note, this census indicates that she could not read or write. It also indicates that she was deaf. She and her husband, John Howerton, live with their daughter and son-in-law Davidson and Mary (Howerton) Davis.
The exact birth date was provided by Barberry's mother, Martha (Craig) Jones, who applied for a widow's pension following the death of Ambrose Jones - a veteran of the American Revolution. In that pension, Martha listed the names and birth dates for each of her children. She wrote, "Barbary Jones was born Aprile 19th 1797" again confirming the name was Barbary/Barberry.
Davis family oral history suggests that Barberry was buried next to her husband John Howerton, who she pre-deceased. There is a burial next to John Howerton with a surviving rock for a headstone and footstone, but no inscription is legible. This may likely be Barberry's grave.
