April 3, 1938 — Jan. 22, 2003
Loretta Mae Overton, 64, died Jan. 22 at her home in Mt. Vernon.
She was born April 3, 1938, in Toledo to Milo and Pearle (Biggs) Franke. Her mother died when she was not quite 2 years old.
In July 1940, her father married Evelyn Schroeder and they ministered in several churches including Mitchell, Dayville and John Day. As a youngster, Loretta helped her father as he pastored in churches by playing the organ, piano, singing and teaching Sunday School. As the years passed, she was joined by four brothers and one sister. She attended school in Mitchell and Dayville and graduated from Dayville High School in 1956.
On Sept. 12, 1959, she married Smokey M. Overton at the Valley Chapel Church in Dayville. Two children were born to this union, Sherrie in 1961 and Wayne in 1963. They lived in a quaint little log house beside the Valley Chapel Church until the South Fork John Day River flooded December 1964. The family moved along Fields Creek after the flood and in 1979 into their "dream home" built by Smokey. Mrs. Overton enjoyed the beautiful view from her living room and watched her husband as he worked the fields or moved cattle.
She enjoyed collecting antiques and enjoyed crocheting, reading and canning.
Mrs. Overton is survived by her husband, Smokey of Mt. Vernon; daughter and son-in-law, Sherrie and Gordon Modey of Burns and their children, Michelle, Matt and Marissa; son, Wayne Overton and his children, Tawnie and Ethan of Baker City; mother Evelyn Franke of Eugene; sister, Dollina Ziebart; brothers, Don Franke, Dave Franke, Dan Franke and Jim Schroeder.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Pearle Franke, and father, Milo Franke.
Funeral services were held Jan. 27 at Living Word Christian Center with interment at Moon Creek Cemetery.
Memorial contributions can be made to Grant County Hospice, P.O. Box 730, Prairie City, OR 97869.
