Jack Eugene Beauchamp,
Buffalo farmer, public leader dies

By The Herald Staff

The man who loved the buffalo, Jack Beauchamp, died at 75 at his rural Ottawa home at the Shadeland Stock Farm.

"He loved to talk about native Americans and he loved to talk about what he called 'that magnificent beast' -- the buffalo," Almeda Edwards, who served on the Ottawa school board with Beauchamp and was a fellow member of the Franklin County Farm Bureau, said. "That probably is how he would want to be remembered."

His interest in buffalo led him to be one of the pioneers of "agritourism," in the county, she said. Shadeland Stock Farm staged tours of the buffalo and tourism activities and the ranch sold a variety of buffalo merchandise, she said.

Beauchamp and his wife Lyndell were always enthusiastic in welcoming visitors and showing them and telling about the buffalo, she said.

"His buffalo were always a big draw," Juanita Peckham, Rantoul, who with her husband Harry are also early agritourism pioneers, said.

Recently, as his health failed, his beloved buffaloes escaped the ranch and neighbors worked together to round them up.

Over the years, Beauchamp served in a variety of elected and public positions, including as a state legislator, president on the Kansas State Board of Agriculture, Ottawa school board member, a member of the Ottawa Recreation Commission and the Kansas State Fair Board.

Most recently, he was a member of the Franklin County Planning Commission.

"He always gave it great study," Peckham, who was a planner at the same time, said. "He always did what was right for the county and not necessarily for individuals ... The county has lost a great man."

Beauchamp was a member of the Richter United Methodist Church; the board of directors at Camp Chippewa, the Franklin County Farm Bureau, Extension Council, Franklin County Historical Society, Ottawa Area Chamber of Commerce and coached Babe Ruth Baseball for many years.
