Uz and Abigail moved from Vermont and settled in the town of Moreau, Saratoga Co., NY about 1797. They remained there , his father a shoemaker, until 1810, when they moved farther west to Cato, Cayuga Co.,NY. His father remained manufacturing boots, shoes till he died there.John was 14 when his father died. Working as a apprentice to his father he continued in the trade.
In the winter months he went to school, summer he worked. After his parents death first his mother then his father he lived with his brother. In 1820 he was in Cato(Victory) working his trade and owning and operating a steam saw-mill and a general country store.
Early 1853 he became sheriff of the county, December 7th, 1853 Governor Seymour appointed him sherriff in Auburn, starting in Jan 1854.
In 1858 he moved to Cato, very political and a Free Soil Democrat until Martin VanBuren, he joined the Republican party when it formed.
During the Civil War he was a special Detective for two years.About this time he was appointed recruiting agent for Auburn.
He later was Postmaster and Justive of The Peace for Cato.
He married in 1823, Thoda Newcomb, daughter of John and Theoda(Hunt)Newcomb.They had 10 children.
