Thomas J. Scales, 80, one of the pioneer residents of Pike county, who has been making his home at Stendal for the past eight years, died of influenza on Thursday night of last week. He was prominent in democratic politics for many years, and served two terms as sheriff of Pike county. He is survived by one son, Edward Scales, former clerk of the Pike circuit court, whose home is in Petersburg, and a daughter, Mrs. Theodore Evans of Winslow. During his political career he was known throughout southern Indiana as "Hickory" Scales.
