Tye, Texas - A. J. Pence, 81, of Tye, died Sunday, September 23, 2007, in Abilene.

His memorial service with the Reverend Jimmy Hatcher and Father Scott Mayer officiating will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday at the Tye Baptist Church. Internment will follow in the Tye Cemetery under the direction of Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 HWY 277 South.

Mr. Pence was born on July 24, 1926, in San Augustine, the son of William Oscar Pence and Elvira Tobitha Wright, and moved to Tye as a young boy. He served in the U.S. Navy and was stationed at both Camp Barkley and in Shelton, Virginia. He owned and operated Tye Concrete for over 30 years and served 10 years on the Tye City Council. He was baptized at the Tye Baptist Church where he remained a member until his death. Mr. Pence will best be remembered by family and friends as a man with a good heart and a compassion for people. He had a generous spirit and was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

Survivors include his wife, Glenda Pence of Tye; a daughter, Yvonne Batts and husband Ron of Tuscola; three sons, Shannon Pence of Seattle, Washington, Phillip Gill and wife Irene of Sweetwater, and Marvin Gill and wife Beth of Dallas; his sister, Elvira Pence of Willis, Texas; four grandchildren, Eric, Andrew, Aaron and Tiffany; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Roland Sanchez, Ubil Espinoza, and Brian Huntley.

His son Lee Pence, a granddaughter, Mercedes Leavonne Pence, 7 brothers and 4 sisters preceded him in death.

Memorial suggestions are Hendrick Hospice Care, P.O. Box 1922, Abilene, Texas 79604; Tye Baptist Church, P.O. Box 235, Tye, Texas 79563; or Episcopal Church of the Heavenly Rest, 602 Meander ST., Abilene, Texas 79602; or donor's favorite charity.
