FREEPORT, Me., Jan. 27‐Richard H. Field, Story Professor, of Law Emeritus at Harvard Law School, died yesterday at the Maine. Medical Center in Portland after a short illness. He was 74 years old.


Professor Field, who was a native of Phillips, Me., received his, Bachelor of Arts degree in 1926 from Harvard Cpllege and his Bachelor of Laws degree in 1929 from Harvard Law School, where he was editor of The Harvard Law Review.


In 1946 he was appointed professor of law at Harvard Law School, and .in 1969 was named Story Professor of Law, a position he held until his retirement in 1973.


From 1929 until 1942, Professor Field was associated with the Bean & McCarthy law firm in Boston: He later became a partner in the firm. In 1942, he was named as the New England regional attorney of the Office of Price Administration. The following year he became general counsel of O.P.A. and served in that capacity in Washington until 1946.


He returned to Maine in 1973 and became associated with the law firm of Murray, Plumb & Murray in Portland, and carried on an active law practice until his death.


In 1930, he was married to Caroline Crosby, who died in 1966. In 1968, he was married to Laura Deane Shaw, who survives him. He is also survived by a son, Prof. Danield Field of Cambridge, Mass., and two daughters, Rienze B. Barker of Weston, Mass., and Margaret F. Aronson of Bethesda, Md.
