A woman of great faith, Marie was a lifetime member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and an active member of the Ladies Aid Sunday Lunch Bunch. She helped start the St. John’s married couples club and a monthly veteran’s card club in Union County. She also initiated and funded the purchase of a church bus to help transport seniors from their homes as well as local nursing homes for weekly church services.
Marie enjoyed bowling and bingo, was an avid Buckeye fan, donated gallons of blood through the Red Cross and was known in Marysville for her volunteering at Memorial Hospital, Memorial Gables and the Windsor Senior Center for a span of 23 years. She received numerous awards, including being inducted into the COAAA Hall of Fame in 2015, and was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award for her 19,000 hours of volunteering work at Memorial Hospital.
Marie was born February 28, 1924 on the family farm outside of Marysville to the late Lewis and Anna Fladt Nicol. She married Ben L. Elsom on June 29, 1947 at St. John’s Lutheran Church. He preceded her in death on March 11, 1992 after 44 years of marriage. She was also preceded in death by her siblings Harold (Betty) Nicol, Willard (Alice) Nicol, Luther (Gertrude) Nicol, Florence (Shade) Watkins, Walter Burger, Ed Eger and her Elsom in-laws.
She is survived by her two daughters, Marilyn (William) Willis of Strongsville, and Edith Lemaster of Marysville; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; siblings Lester (Pat) Nicol, Dorothy Burger and Lucille Eger; and numerous nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
Calling hours will be 12:30-1:30 pm Sunday at the Ingram Funeral Home where masks will be required and social distancing will be practiced. Private funeral services will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church with Pastor Jacob Heino officiating, and burial will follow at the church cemetery next to her husband.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to ViaQuest Residential Services or St. John’s Worship Anew DVD Ministry in care of the funeral home. The Elsom family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the entire team of devoted caregivers who looked after Marie in recent months. We will be forever grateful.
