Lula M. "Buddy" Slackman, 87, of South Orange departed on Monday January 11, 2010. Mrs. Slackman was born and raised in her current home in South Orange. She graduated from Columbia High School in 1941. Professionally, she worked for the Essex County Welfare Department for many years before her retirement. Among her many civic and social activities, she was a member of the First Baptist Church, a charter member of the South Orange Civic Association and served as the first African American P.T.A. president of the First Street School, South Orange. Mrs. Slackman was the beloved wife of the late John H. Slackman; devoted mother of Dr. Adunni Slackman-Anderson Herman, M.D. and John Edward Slackman Penny and dear sister of Marion Wilson. She was also the loving grandmother of Nkosi Anderson, Anwar Anderson and John Edward Slackman Jr.; aunt of George L. Wilson Jr. and sister-in-law of Isabelle Newson.
