Born in Brooklyn, New York, he was the son of Max and Ida Babsky. He graduated from the City College of New York in 1926. Sidney was a 31 year old teacher living in the Bronx, when he volunteered to serve in the International Brigades in the Spanish Civil War. He arrived in Spain, April 1, 1937, and served with the Abraham Lincoln Brigade. He was captured on March 16, 1938 during The Retreats. New York Times journalist, William P. Carney interviewed Sidney, Ralph Neafus, Morris Ecker, and Leon Ticer at El Carmen Church, Alcaniz, the week of their execution.
