Phyllis Joyce Scherle, 91, of Martinsville, passed from this life on Friday, October 30, 2020 at Franciscan Health St. Francis Hospice House in Indianapolis. She was born on Thursday, April 18, 1929 in Pinckneyville, Illinois to the late Orval and Ernestine (Jenkel) Rushing.
Mrs. Scherle graduated from Pinckneyville High School with the class of 1946. During her senior year of high school, she married the love of her life, Rev. Kenneth E. Scherle, on December 14, 1946. He preceded her in death on May 13, 1996.
She expanded her education attending Southern Illinois University earning her bachelor’s degree in 1958 and her master’s degree in 1959. With a deep-seated love for education, she researched American poets and English education. Mrs. Scherle was Assistant Professor of English, Advisor for English Majors, Coordinator of Graduate English Proficiency, and Coordinator of Developmental Reading at IUPUI in Indianapolis. Her teaching specialties included American literature, fiction, poetry, and reading.
Mrs. Scherle’s dedication earned her many accolades and achievements in the education community. She was a Past President of the Indiana College English Association, an Editor of the “Associator” from 1973 – 1984, served on the National College English Association Board of Directors from 1993-1994, recipient of the CEA Honorary Life Membership Award in 1993, recipient of the CEA Distinguished Service Award in 1995, and the recipient of the Indiana College English Association’s Scholar/Teacher Award in 1996. She was published in the CEA Forum and in poetry journals.
She also was a talented singer and served as music director at Calvary Heights Baptist Church and New Testament Baptist Church for many years.
She leaves behind her family including her daughters, Marla Scherle of Martinsville, Darla (husband, Richard) Crone of Eminence, and Carole Kinder of Martinsville; brother, Larry Rushing of Pinckneyville, IL and Ira (wife, Evelyn) Rushing of Pinckneyville, IL; sister-in-law, Bonnie Rushing Pinckneyville, IL, Leola Rushing of Sparta, IL, and Melba Jacoby of Topeka, KS; grandchildren, Taylor Kinder of Kansas City, MO, Kristin Day of Eminence, Paul (wife, Bridget) Kinder of Gosport, and Angi (husband, Doug) Janes of Greenfield; and great grandchildren, River Day, Camilla Kinder, Margot Kinder, Brettlyn Kinder, Braniah Kinder, Delanie Janes, and Sydney Janes.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Orval and Ernestine Rushing; husband, Rev. Kenneth Scherle; son-in-law, Robert Kinder; and brother, Marion Rushing and Maurice Rushing.
The family will gather for a graveside service on Monday, November 2, 2020 at 11:00 am at Friendship Park Cemetery in Paragon with Rev. Mike Herzberger officiating. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Neal & Summers Funeral and Cremation Center in Martinsville.
