Bishop, Pastor, Minister of The Gospel, Musician, Songwriter, Arranger, and Record Producer. Bishop Rance Allen, a minister and singer widely known for the gospel hit “Something About the Name Jesus,” has passed away. He was 71.

Bishop Allen was an American Bishop, Minister, and Gospel Musician, and the founder and leader of the famed Rance Allen Group. Known for his extremely wide vocal range and powerful singing voice, Allen became known as the main lead vocalist and the leader of the influential group.

News of his death was formally announced by Bishop Robert G. Rudolph Jr., who is the Adjutant General of the Church of God in Christ. “God, who is omnipotent and omniscient, has summoned His Servant, Bishop Rance Lee Allen, to eternal rest,” the official note read.

Bishop Allen was born in 1948 in Monroe, Michigan to Thomas and Emma Pearl Allen. He had 11 siblings: six sisters and five brothers. Bishop Allen founded the Rance Allen Group in Detroit in 1969 joined by his brothers Thomas and Steve.

At the age of five he began his preaching ministry and by age nine was preaching throughout Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania. He was licensed to preach at age 12 and has since carried the Word of the Lord throughout the United States and abroad. In 1978 he was ordained an Elder by the late Bishop John Seth Bailey and subsequently served 6-1/2 years as Associate Pastor of Holiness Temple Church of God In Christ (COGIC) in Monroe, Michigan.

On July 21, 1985 the late Bishop Gilbert “G.E.” Patterson, of Memphis, Tennessee, founded New Bethel Church in Toledo, Ohio and installed Bishop Allen there as Senior Pastor where he currently served until his passing. In the Fall of 1988 Bishop Patterson became re-affiliated with the Church of God In Christ (COGIC) and, as a result, New Bethel changed its name to New Bethel Church of God In Christ.

In November 2011, Rance Allen was elevated to the office of Bishop in the Church of God in Christ, for the Michigan Northwestern Harvest Jurisdiction, succeeding the late Bishop Alfred Knight, Jr. and was consecrated on November 7, 2011 during the 104th Holy Convocation in St. Louis, Missouri. He was also blessed with the awesome and humbling opportunity to preach the main message to thousands during the 90th, 96th and 105th International COGIC Holy Convocations.

Bishop Allen served many years on the board of the Neighborhood Improvement Foundation of Toledo, Inc., a community organization whose mission was dedicated to improving inner-city environments. In recognition of his dedicated years in ministry the Urban Bible Institute of Detroit bestowed upon him an Honorary Doctorate of Divinity in 1995.

Bishop Allen was married to Evangelist Ellen Marie Groves-Allen. The two were married on December 1, 1970. The calling on her life has been an enormous blessing to Bishop Allen as she has helped him take his ministries to a greater level in God. While there are no natural children born to this union they share their love and support to many God-children.

Bishop Allen and his group had performed with many gospel musicians throughout the country, including Andrae Crouch, Marvin Winans, Bebe and Cece Winans, the Clark Sisters, Kirk Franklin, Marvin Sapp, Tye Tribbett, Shirley Caesar, Donnie McClurkin, and Mary McLaurine Glover. He also performed for President Barack Obama at a White House Celebration of Gospel Music and was nominated for five Grammy Awards.
