Ya'akov Zvi ben David Arieh z"l. British Orthodox Rabbi and Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the Commonwealth (1991 to 2013). Theologian, Philosopher, prolific Writer (more than 100 published books), including "Not in G-d's Name: Confronting Religious Violence" (2015), "A Letter in the Scroll" (2000) won a Jewish National Book Award, "Covenant & Conversation Genesis" (2009) was also awarded a Jewish National Book Award and that series of commentaries are studied as part of the weekly Torah portion by the Jewish community. He was also an international Speaker and Thought Leader in inter-faith dialogue, politician and vegetarian. Educated, Christ's College Finchley London, Gonville and Caius College University of Cambridge earning a first-class Master of Arts degree in Philosophy (1972). Post-graduate studies at New College University of Oxford and King's College London, where he earned his PhD in Moral Philosophy (1981). Awarded a Life Peerage in 2009, he took the title Baron Sacks of Aldgate and a seat in the UK House of Lords. Married to Elaine Taylor (1970) and had 3 children. He died of cancer after being diagnosed the previous month.
