Eugene Robert Wait, 62, Chetek, Wis., died Saturday, Sept. 22, 2007, at the home of his sister.

He was born May 11, 1945, at Eau Claire to Walter and Lorraine (Bryngelson) Wait. Gene grew up in southern Wisconsin, where he attended Monroe High School before enlisting in the Marine Corps on Sept 25, 1964.

During his four-year enlistment, he served 13 months in Vietnam. When his brother Jerald was sent to Vietnam, Gene successfully petitioned his CO to allow Jerald another post, and Gene would stay in Vietnam instead. He received the Vietnam Campaign, National Defense Service, Vietnamese Service and two good conduct medals in addition to a Presidential Unit Citation.

He completed his GED and became a MCI-Marine Noncommissioned Officer after attending NCO School. He was a rifleman and proof director of small arms. He received his honorable discharge on Sept 24, 1968, as a sergeant.

He worked in manufacturing in Two Rivers and then Rice Lake, most recently at Mastercraft Industries finishing kitchen cabinetry.

He lived with and cared for his grandmother for several years, assuming all household chores, including baking and cooking. He earned the name "Aunt Gene" on a homemade birthday card from his family that he loved dearly and enjoyed showing anyone who visited.

He was a caring person who loved his family. He bought his mother flowers on Mother's Day, even after her passing.

Gene was very witty, a trait from Grandma Bryngleson, and often surprised himself at how effortlessly he got the last word.

He loved hunting and fishing, singing and playing guitar (like his father and grandpa before him, and his son who carries on the tradition).

Surviving are daughters, Cynthia Wait of Des Moines, Iowa, Melissa Buesing and Dawn (Jeff) Freund, both of Green Bay; a son, Jesse (Elaine) of Parrish, Fla.; grandchildren, Jonathan James, Eugene, Alexis and Jordan; his father, Walter Wayne Wait; sisters, Patricia (Dale) Millermon of Rice Lake and Carolyn (Barry) Larsen of Rice Lake; brothers, Jerald (Conchita) and Larry (Mary), both of Barron; and half-brothers, Lance (Heather) Manecke of Cameron, Donald (Stacy) Manecke and Darwin Manecke, both of Rice Lake.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Alice Lorraine Manecke; and grandparents, Robert and Alice Bryngelson

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, from Jarocki Funeral Home, Rice Lake, with burial at Northern Wisconsin Veteran's Memorial Cemetery, near Spooner.

Friends may call for an hour prior to services at the funeral home Thursday.
