He was educated at Victoria College on the Isle of Jersey, and immigrated to America in 1875. He studied medicine in Chicago and at the Detroit College of Medicine where he graduated in 1889 as a Gold Medalist. Dr. Newman practiced medicine for about ten years, serving as House Physician at St. Luke's Hospital. Following some years as administrator of the Daniel Scotten estate, he was a Director of the National Bank of Commerce, an incorporator of the Detroit Museum of Art and member of many clubs. He and his wife Bessie lived in a grand home at 1630 Jefferson Ave; they had no children.
