Born in Norfolk, England,(Watlington Parish) the son of Dr. William John Newman and Sara Johnson Newman, he was educated at Victoria College, the Isle of Jersey and in Dieppe France. He emigrated to Canada in 1880 and to the USA in 1885 where he studied medicine. He later became a professor at the Detroit College of Medicine.
He married Amy Seymour Gallon in Canada in 1889.
Their daughter Dorothy Newman Dechert, is buried near them. Daughter, Nesta, married Paul Weadock.
