The wife of Kenneth Andrew Caddell whom she married in Asbury Park, New Jersey. Kenny was a disabled Veteran of World War I. He died in 1952 at the old VA Hospital in Fayetteville just after his daughter Faye was married.
Verdie and Kenny were the parents of:
Edith Faye Caddell Sadler (1932-2006)
Patricia Mae Caddell Van Camp (1930-2019 )
Verdie Mae Ritter Caddell owned and operated Caddell's Stables in Southern Pines for 40 years. She also directed the riding program for Alamance Saddle Club at Elon College for five years, 1949 to June of 1954. During the winters, beginning in Jan 1952, she would teach Equitation at Meredith College in Raleigh. Prior to Oct 1949 Verdie owned a Riding Stable in Myrtle Beach.
In 1953, Verdie married Martin Ferguson. In 1954 they opened the Sedgefield Saddle Club at Wonderland Farm on the Stark Dillard estate.
From 1950 to 1970 Mrs. Caddell was first the Riding Counselor, then Director of the Riding Program for Dr. A. P. Kephart's Camp Yonahlossee in Blowing Rock, N.C. Every year in late May, she hauled at least 4 loads of horses up the steep mountain to Camp in her big red truck. Nine horses each load!
Miss Agnes Jeter, on the right in the top picture, was the Director of Camp Yonahlossee for Dr. and Mrs. Kephart. She and my Granny were great friends.
Mrs. Caddell died from injuries resulting from a car accident on Midland Road in which she was a passenger.
