On June 26, 1997 this infant's body was discovered in the men's pit toilet at Garnet Lake State Forest Campgound by a septic worker pumping out the tank. Forensic pathologists determined her age to have been 38 to 40 weeks gestation and her race probably white, but they were unable to determine if her birth had been live. It was thought that her body had been abandoned there within the last month. Investigators were unable to solve the case at the time, but DNA samples were taken and preserved and the case remains open and the investigation continues. Police gave the infant the name "Baby Girl Garnet," naming her after the area in which she was discovered. With $951 donated by forty-four people she was given a burial in Maplewood Cemetery three months later. The Rev. Ora Wyse, who presided over her gravesite ceremony, had these words - "This little girl surely is the picture of pureness and sinlessness. God knew this little girl before we ever knew of her."
