Steven Delbert Nelson, 72, of Nampa passed away November 8, 2020 at his home of natural causes. Steven was born August 17, 1948 to Jay Lutz Nelson and Nada Mae Smith Nelson in Montpelier, Idaho. He lived in Montpelier until moving to Nampa in 1955 with his family. Steven attended the first grade at Lincoln School in Nampa, and then Roosevelt elementary and later graduated form Nampa High in 1966.
Steve worked as a mechanic for a few years before becoming a Deputy Sheriff for Canyon County where he served for several years. He then worked for the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office in Idaho Falls for 16 years, until his retirement in 2001. He loved working in the law enforcement field. We as a family are proud of his service and dedication to helping others.
He had a love for the outdoors, fishing, visits to the cabin in Featherville, riding horses (even though he was allergic that did not hold him back). He had a lifelong desire to learn to fly and did earn his pilot’s license which gave him many years of joy. And we cannot forget his love for fast cars-- and he does have a few tickets to show for that!
Steve had a great love for his dogs. The breed of choice was a black dog called a Schipperke. He chose this breed because their personalities were so well matched -- being strong willed and very determined not to follow orders. Between the two of them…the dog usually won!
Steve was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
He was preceded in death by his son Randy Jay Nelson; parents Jay and Nada Nelson; grandparents Lester and Ila Nelson, Delbert and Nelda Smith; and Derringer and Shadow—his best friends. He is survived by his sisters Jalene Kindred of Meridian and Kellie (Rick) Overall of Kuna; brothers Gary (Liz) Nelson of Boise and Scott (Kelly Davis) Nelson of Nampa; his beloved dog Ruger; nieces: Lisa Gibson, Lori, Rietze and Kelsey Nelson; nephews: Jayson, LJ, Matt, Jake and Kurt Overall, Tucker Nelson and Casey Markwell; 16 great-nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM, Monday, November 16, 2020 at Kohlerlawn Cemetery 76 6th Street North in Nampa. Please wear a mask and observe physical distancing. Chairs will be provided and some heaters in case of the weather not being agreeable.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests a donation to support our local first responders who serve and protect us every day.
