Herman was the son of John and Louisa Haas, born Koein Stadt Rheinland. He came to the USA, Sept 28,1849. He joined the 1st Ohio infantry,April 16,1861 and fought in the battle of Bull Run. After his three month enlistment, he joined the 11 th Ohio Calvary under the command of William Collins,whom Fort Collins, Colorado is named. He was stationed at Fort Laramie, Wyo. He was a farrier. Herman was Sergeant of the guard the night Porugee Phillips made his famous ride from Fort Plil Kearney, alerting them of Crazy Horse attack. Herman rallied the fort, it was Christmas eve. After his discharge , he went back to New York and brought his soon to be wife Wilhelmini ( Minni ) Schilling to Cheyenne Wyo.. He opened a blacksmith shop . His house still stands on Pioneer Ave in Cheyenne. He later became a member of the first Territorial Legislature in Wyo, which gave women the right to vote. He was very proud that he never had a day of formal education. He is listed as one of the pioneers of Cheyenne Wyo.
