The history of the White family descendants in this area are of the Pilgrims who came to America in 1620 on the Mayflower for religious freedom. They descended from Peregrine White, son of William and Susanna (Fuller) White. He was born on the Mayflower after it had landed at Plymouth Rock.
James White, son of Alexander White II. Alexander White owned and financed a wagon train himself in the Revolutionary War where he became a Captain. His wife was Mary Clifford. James White was one of several children. He was born June 19, 1791 and died June 8,1858. He married Mary Coleman who is buried in the White cemetery on Pond Creek, Wood County, WV. Their children: (1) Jane White (Nov. 25, 1814-) married Samuel Mills. (2) Mateldia White (Nov. 12, 1816-) married first, Edward White and had several children. After his death she married Allen Davis and had several more children. (3) Mary White (March 15-Jan. 2, 1847) married Whiting Smith. (4) Nancy White (Sept. 2, 1823-1855) married but is unknown. (5) Sarah White (Sept. 10, 1823-1895), Ohio, buried at DeWitt Cemetery. She married John Marshall Smith, a brother to her sister Mary's husband. They were our ancestors, my mother Audrey Smith Brewer's grandparents and my great-grandparents. (6) Charlotte White (July 5, 1825-Aug. 7, 1856) married Ichabod Adkens. They had two daughters who died young. (7) Rawey White (Sept. 20, 1837-Nov 28, 1852). (8) Thomas White (Sept. 20, 1829-). (9) Nelson Cook White (May 21, 1832-) married Emily Davidson. (10) Amanda White (Aug. 23, 1834-Aug. 19, 1838). (11) Isabelle White (Sept. 20, 1837-June 29, 1859).
James White was born in Harding County, Virginia (WV) June 19, 1791. When he was six years old. His parents sold their land and moved to Harrison County, now Lewis County, in the vicinity of Jackson's Mill. He enlisted in the War of 1812. After the war he went to Pond Creek with a brother where he met and married Mary Coleman Dec.13, 1813. She was born Oct. 2, 1796 and died Dec. 29, 1853 *. He was a splendid marksman with a rifle and he hid along the river in bushes and shot Indians. Submitted by David Allen Brewer.
