Kermit was born the third son and sixth child of Kit Carson Graber (1875-1962) and Iva Mae McKeehan (1879-1950).

On the 26 March 1932, Kermit married Pearl Elizabeth McNamara (1913-1998), the daughter of Thomas Patrick McNamara (1879-1959) and Harriet Elizabeth Lattary (1887-1942), in Starkweather, Ramsey Co., North Dakota. Kermit and Pearl had three children between 1933 and 1948: Lawrence, Dennis, and James. Their marriage, however, eventually came to an end in divorce, after which Kermit married Margaret Matilda Robinette (1914-1987), whom he married on the 10 October 1959 in Minnesota.

Kermit was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret, who died on the 25 January 1987, and was buried in Resurrection Cemetery. Kermit's first wife, Pearl, died on the 14 April 1998, and was also buried in Resurrection Cemetery.
