Carpenter and builder. With Benjamin Ferguson as a partner, they built the American hotel in Springfield. They were contractors for part of the work on the old state house, now the Sangamon County courthouse. In 1850, after the death of Mr. Ferguson, he took the contract and built the north and south portico to the state house. The stone used for the building was taken from the Le Roy Hill farm, eight miles south of Springfield. That home later became the home of his daughter, Alice and her husband Samuel Newton Shoup.

William Mourer was born about 1807, in Berkley county, Va. His parents emigrated to Muskingum county, Ohio, where his father died. In 1923 or '4 he went to Washington county, Maryland, where he was married Dec. 12, 1933, to Jane I. Ensminger, who was born May 8, 1815, in that county. They had one child in Maryland, and moved to Springfield, Ill., arriving the all of 1836, where they had four children. Of their five children - George W., Alice J. (married Samuel N. Shoup), her twin Margaret Maryland, Virginia, and Eugenie G. (married John N. Gatton). He bought a farm and moved in the spring of 1853 to Woodside township. While discharging the duties of grand juror, he was taken violently ill, of pneumonia, and died in Springfield, June 10, 1867.
