Anthony L. Amaral
A resident of Discovery Bay. Born November 22, 1915 on Faial Island, Azores. Died in Oakland on July 12, 2007. Tony lived most of his life in the Bay Area. His father died on the ship that brought baby Anthony, his three older sisters, and his mother, pregnant with her fifth child to Rhode Island. Although she spoke little or no English, his mother, Amelia followed the course her husband had charted for the family and moved to Mission San Jose.
In 1934, Tony graduated from Washington High School where he played varsity football and was known as "Truck". He then studied Mortuary Science and maintained his embalmer's license throughout his working life. Before leaving to serve in the U.S. Army during World War II, Tony married Virginia DeMoura who died in 1993 after 52 years of marriage. When the war ended, Tony returned to Oakland where he and Virginia founded, and for many years operated Packard Limousine Service. After being shot during a second armed robbery of the limousine service, he sold the business and retired with Virgie to their dream house on the water's edge at Discovery Bay, where Tony lived until shortly before his death.
Tony was devoted to his family and his many friends in Oakland, Alameda and Discovery Bay and in the RV community. He is survived by three of his sisters, Mary Briar of Stockton, Amelia Vargas of Fremont, and Helen Groh of San Francisco, their children and grandchildren. He is also survived by his stepdaughter, Phyllis Allen and her two children, Bruce Bolla and April Fritz who will greatly miss their beloved Baba, and by April's baby daughter, Liberty.
An inveterate gardener and a man of few words, predominant among them "no", according to the children in his life, Tony could be eloquent. After Virgie's passing, Phyllis asked why he never planted flowers anymore. His simple answer. "I planted them for her."
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, August 28 at 4 p.m. at Greer Family Mortuary in Alameda.
