Phil Menninger, a longtime administrator at the world-renowned clinic that bore his family’s name, died Tuesday at the age of 87.
Born in Topeka in 1928, Menninger was the son and grandson of Menninger Foundation co-founders William Menninger and Charles Menninger.
After serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, Phil Menninger graduated from Washburn University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.
At the family business, Menninger held several administrative positions, according to an obituary and Kansas State Historical Society archives. He was the director of development services and director of employee wellness, as well as a trustee for four decades.
Menninger’s death comes a little more than a year after the death of his wife of 56 years, Georgia, last March. They wed in St. Louis, Mo., in 1959.
Outside of work, Menninger was president of the Topeka Lions Club and Boys and Girls Club of Topeka. Memorial contributions are being directed to the Boys and Girls Club, 550 S.E. 27th St.
Menninger was, according to his obituary, an avid cyclist and founding member of what was once called the Kaw Valley Bicycle Touring Club and is now simply known as the Kaw Valley Bicycle Club.
Menninger is survived by two daughters, Beverly and Susan, as well as brothers Roy and Walter Menninger, both of whom were psychiatrists at the Menninger Foundation. He also has three grandsons.
Memorial services for Menninger will be held July 2 at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 817 S.W. Harrison Ave.
