Passing of Sergeant John R. Alstadt, Jr. #0027, (Ret.)

It is with regret to report the passing of John R. Alstadt, Jr. from cancer, at the age of 72, on November 19, 2020. He was appointed a trooper on February 8, 1974, graduated from the 37th Academy Recruit Class and began patrol at Troop 1, Penny Hill, in August 1974.

On February 1, 1978 he was transferred to Troop 2, State Road, in the Criminal Division and was a detective in the Criminalistics Unit (State Road) from 1978 - 1989.

John was responsible for the identification of the Rockland Man,

an unidentified person, killed in 1968 in Brandywine State Park.

Sgt. Alstadt served in the Steven Pennell Serial Murder Task Force

1988 - 1990 as the Chief Criminalist.

He was transferred to Headquarters and served in the newly created Statewide Homicide Unit and was the first Director of D.S.P. Crime Laboratory 1991 - 1993.

Sgt. John R. Alstadt #0027 retired on March 31, 1997 as a Detective/Sergeant at Troop 3, Camden.

During his career, was the historian for the Division and assisted in the production of the 75th Anniversary book. He also wrote, In Memoriam, a book dedicated to the troopers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

After retirement he became the Curator of the Delaware State Police Museum and wrote a book entitled With Love to Yourself and Baby: The Story of the Poison Candy Murder Case. which occurred in Dover, Delaware in 1898.

During his tenure as Curator of the Museum, he wrote a second book; Images of America, Delaware State Police, which was published in 2010 and documents the history of the Division from 1920 - 1985.

On December 20, 2013 John retired as Curator having served the State of Delaware for 39 years.
