Harry Tombleson, Sportsman, Dies
Services for Harry R. Tombleson, 60, Blackwood's most ardent sportsman, will be held tomorrow at 130 p. m. in the funeral home of Charles W. McCann, Church street, Blackwood, where friends may call tonight Burial will be in. Eglington cemetery. Mr. Tombleson died Thursday in Jefferson hospital. His home was on Garfield avenue. Despite his five-year illness, which necessitated the amputation of both legs, he was seemingly on the road to recovery and was active in Blackwood's sports, fraternal and civic activities. Proprietor of Blackwood garage 30 years, he was honorary member of the Camden Auto Trades Association, in which he was long active. For 20 years Mr. Tombleson was Blackwood's fire chief, and last year served as president of the fire company. The idol of the community's sports fans, Mr. Tombleson, who was called Harry by thousands, became active in that field 32 years ago, first as pitcher then as manager of Blackwood's baseball team in the old Camden County League. Harry's spirit was exemplified in 1946, when he refused to be daunted by the loss of his limbs and on Labor Day tossed out the first ball from his wheelchair for the game between Blackwood and Runnemede while a crowd cheered. Other sports benefited from Harry's interest,, and he was one of the organizers of the Camden County Fish and Game Association. He was a member of Freedom lodge. 9. Knights of Pythias; IORM tribe, 104; Lake Improvement Association and the Kiwanis Club, all in Blackwood. Surviving are his widow, Estella S.; a daughter, Mrs. Miriam E. Taylor, also Blackwood; his father, Michael N., and a brother, Charles E.. both of Westmont: a sister, Mrs. Hazel Farrier, Somerton, Pa., and two grandchildren,
