U.S. Ambassador (Ret.).

A career Foreign Service officer, Dr. Boonstra served as ambassador to Costa Rica from 1967 to 1969. He died of pneumonia at his home in Gainesville, Florida. He moved to Gainesville in 1975 after living in Washington, D.C., for more than 30 years, between postings abroad.

Before his appointment to Costa Rica, he was Deputy Chief of Mission and Charge d'effaires in Mexico City, a political adviser to the U.S. military forces under the Southern Command in Panama and Director for South American Affairs in the U.S. State Department. He had also served in Argentina during the regime of Juan Peron and in Cuba as guerrilla fighters under Fidel Castro battled to overthrow the Batista regime. In his final assignment overseas, Dr. Boonstra was Consul General in charge of the U.S. consulate in Rio de Janeiro, from 1970 to 1974.

He was a graduate of Michigan State University and received his master's degree in economics in 1937 from Louisiana State University and his doctorate in agricultural economics in 1942. He entered the Foreign Service in 1946. During World War II, he worked for the U.S. Agriculture Department as a tropic development specialist, overseeing food supply and sugar purchases in Cuba and the Caribbean. He also worked on agricultural reconstruction in the Philippines and Southeast Asia. During his retirement, he was a consultant to Weyerhaeuser Company, an international forest products company.

His first wife of 16 years, Mildred Fereira Boonstra, died in 1960. Survivors include his wife of 40 years; two children from his first marriage, both residing in Miami; two daughters from his second marriage; a sister; six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
