GERTRUDE G. SPELLMAN, 91, of TOMS RIVER, died Monday, Oct. 1, at home. Born in East Rutherford, she formerly resided in Mantoloking Dunes since 1953 before moving to Jackson four years ago and then to Toms River last year. She served as a nurses aide during World War II. She worked for PSE&G in Hackensack, and later worked for Scholastic Magazine in Englewood Cliffs. She was a member of Seaside Chapter of Deborah. She was an avid Bridge player and artist. She enjoyed arts and crafts.
She was predeceased by her husband, Wilbert J., in 2003. Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Mary Lou of Toms River; a daughter, Barbara Newman of Essex Junction; five grandchildren, Christina, Brian, John, Stephanie, and Christopher; and two great-grandchildren, Sophia and Ella.
The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. Friday until her service at 11 a.m. at the Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals, 809 Central Ave., Seaside Park. Burial will follow to St. Joseph's Cemetery, Toms River. Condolences may be sent by visiting www.ryanfuneralhome.com.
