Born in the Piedmont textile town of Concord, North Carolina, Robert was the second child of Robert E. Peurifoy and Hazel Staton Peurifoy. He was the brother of Patricia "Trish" Peurifoy Lanier (Ken Lanier) and Jeffrey L Peurifoy (Mary Archer Peurifoy.) He was a member of the 1969 class of Concord High School. His plans were to attend North Carolina State University to study architecture.
Robert grew up in Second Presbyterian Church, his Mother's childhood Church, where he was baptized. From age 4 till leaving School he sang in one of he Church choirs, nurturing his love of vocal music.
Following High School, he attended Montreat-Anderson College (now Montreat College.) During the first semester he had an experience of New Birth and became a believer in Jesus Christ. Four weeks later he had a tremendous experience in the Holy Spirit. The following winter, while attending a youth conference, he was called into the ministry with hearing these words, "You Shall minister unto me." Later would discover this was a quote from the Old Testament book of Ezekial. From that time forward he never looked back from full-time ministry.
The next years were filled with spiritual growth under the ministry of Adger McKay and Jay Fesperman. These were two men of God which Robert looked up to for guidance and growth.

Returning home his Freshman year discovered his parents had begun attending a United Methodist Church. There under the mentoring of Rev. G. Howard Allred, he joined Epworth church and began the process of entering the Ministry through the United Methodist Church.
Robert next attended for his Junior and Senior years Scarritt College for Christian Workers in Nashville, TN. His major was Bible and Sociology. It was a challenging introduction in a type of Christian belief with which he had little exposure. However, he began to see the dynamics of the relationship between Christian faith and society. Soon involved in the Vanderbilt University Christian fellowship he easily fell into a teaching role with the group. Thus would begin a life long love for teaching the Bible.

For Seminary, he attended Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C. Because of his earlier education in Bible and Theology was able to enter at a second-year level. Taking advantage of this he explored in-depth studies in the New Testament and Theology. For his final year, he postponed graduation to study at St. Georges College in Jerusalem. Later he would pursue the Doctor of Ministry degree at Drew University in Madison, N.J.

In 1975 he was accepted as a probationary Clergy member of the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church and ordained a Deacon. He also took his first appointment at the Marriottsville Circuit in the Baltimore Conference in Marylandl of the UMC. After two years he returned to Western North Carolina to assume the Pastoral leadership of the Shooting Creek Circuit in Clay County. In 1978 he was ordained an Elder in the United Methodist Church and was accepted into full membership of the Conference.
The following thirty years were filled with wonderful ministry. He served the following churches in North Carolina: Shooting Creek Circuit, Robbinsville UMC in Graham County, Bethlehem UMC in Davie County, Trinity UMC in Asheville, Christ UMC in Charlotte, and Deerfield UMC in Boone. In 2005 health issues required him to take a medical leave.

In 1978 Robert met Virginia Francis Byrd, a friend of a friend. He was smitten. A two-year relationship following by an engagement on Valentines' Day eve in 1980. On October 4, 1980, they were married at Ledford's Chapel United Methodist Church in Hayesville, NC. Two children would follow in the next years. Rebekah Ann in 1984 and Nathan in 1988.
