MUNCIE--Luther Smith Fritch, passed away at Westminster Village in Muncie, IN, on January 22, 2011 at the age of 101.
He was born on April 29, 1909 in Pen Argyl, PA, the son of Rev. Dr. George W. Fritch, Sr., and Ellen R. (Smith) Fritch.
Mr. Fritch had a brother, the Rev. George W. Fritch, Jr. and a sister, Mrs. Florence Smith, both of whom predeceased him.
The Fritch family has had connections to Berks County, PA since the early nineteenth century.
Mr. Fritch graduated from Emmaus High School in Emmaus, PA, attended Lehigh University and graduated from Albright College in Reading, PA, in 1932, with a degree in Chemistry and Science.
He married Dorothea E. Sterrett of Reading, PA on May 20, 1939. Dorothea S. Fritch died in Muncie, Indiana in 1988. Mr. Fritch is survived by two sons, Alan S. Fritch, Salisbury, Maryland, and Stephen A. Fritch, Mandeville, Louisiana. He is also survived by four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Mr. Fritch was employed by Westinghouse Electric Corp. for over thirty years and was part of the design team for the Large Transformer Plant built in Muncie. He was a long time member of, and an officer in, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He retired in 1974 and enjoyed playing golf and bridge.
Mr. Fritch had many friends in Muncie, including the late Ella Mae Seward and her family with whom he greatly enjoyed spending time. He also considered Mr. and Mrs. Rudy Flenning and their family as good friends during his stay at Westminster.
Mr. Fritch was an active member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. The family will hold a memorial service at a time and location to be announced. Mr. Fritch will be buried at Charles Evans Cemetery in Reading, Pennsylvania at the convenience of the family. The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
